Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 68 (March 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William C. Fite (ASN: 35460568), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 February 1945 in Germany. After a bridgehead had been forced across the Sauer River and into the Siegfried Line in Germany on 9 February 1945, food and ammunition supply became critical. Private First Class Fite and six members of the Ammunition and Pioneer Platoon volunteered for the arduous work of hand carrying supplies across the river through shell fire to the advance units. For thirty continuous hours Private First Class Fite and his companions labored over rough terrain and up steep banks, often necessitating the use of block and tackle to accomplish their mission. Although wounded on the first and third crossings, Private First Class Fite continued until six round trips were completed to keep the battalion supplied until a bridge was erected. His courage, determination, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
