Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 64 (March 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harold W. Rice (ASN: 33602052), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, in the assault against the enemy held town of Kehmen, Luxembourg, Sergeant Rice, while serving as a tank commander, was wounded by sniper fire. Realizing the need for experienced tank commanders in the battle which was increasing in its fury, he voluntarily remained on duty in his tank and capably fought for over three hours. Later when the battle subsided, he agreed to have his wounds dressed while his tank was being serviced. Sergeant Rice’s gallant courage, aggressiveness, and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
