Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (February 24, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Leo K. Alexander (ASN: 35504769), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, during an attack toward Hosingen, Luxembourg, the Division Reconnaissance Troop was affording flank protection by road patrols. Technician Fifth Grade Alexander and five other members of the troop volunteered to contact adjoining units in Munshausen, Luxembourg. Shortly before dark, when only five hundred yards from the village, they were fired upon by an enemy anti-tank gun. Technician Fifth Grade Alexander and his companions, on foot, flanked and captured the enemy gun and ammunition. Voluntarily continuing on into the village they captured thirty-one of the enemy and by clearing the town eliminated a possible threat to the attacking Division. The courage, aggressiveness, and steadfast devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Alexander are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
