Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (February 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Ganzer M. Roland (ASN: 37746839), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 27 January 1945 in Luxembourg. After savagely fighting into Hosingen, Luxembourg, on 27 January 1945, Private Roland and a small group of men were forced to withdraw because of a superior enemy counterattack. Under terrific enemy fire Private Roland carried a wounded man to the rear and while withdrawing encouraged and organized the soldiers he passed, stopping frequently to give aid and comfort to wounded men until they could be evacuated. His courage, determination, and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
