Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (February 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Eugene Palmer (ASN: 33936652), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, while assaulting Kehmen, Luxembourg, Corporal Palmer, serving as a platoon sergeant, constantly exposed himself to small arms and mortar fire to control and inspire his men. Armed with an M-1 rifle as his sole weapon he assaulted several enemy positions and directed friendly tanks to fire on strong points of resistance. He continued to fight until wounded and evacuated. The bravery, leadership, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Palmer were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
