The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Ng K. Chong (ASN: 32790773), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 21 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, when his company was temporarily delayed by a German strongpoint, Staff Sergeant Cong, a squad leader, successfully used the protection of a brick ledge, a shrine, and lastly trees to advance two hundred yards and kill the gunners of a machine gun in the second story of an enemy-held house, thus permitting the company to advance without casualties. He was mortally wounded in performing this act of heroism. The bravery, aggressiveness, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Cong were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
