Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (February 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Salvadore T. Lemos (ASN: 39277822), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 November 1944 in France. Serving as a field artillery wire corporal on 9 November 1944, near St. Jure, France, Private First Class Lemos was painfully wounded in the face by a shell fragment, but refusing medical aid, he continued maintaining communication with forward liaison. That night, learning of his superior officer’s need for maps, Private First Class Lemos, although having had only temporary first aid, secured the necessary maps and, because the liaison group had moved in his absence, searched determined throughout the night to find and deliver the maps early the following morning. His courage, initiative, and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
