Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (February 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harold E. Bowers (ASN: 35223810), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 23 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, after an assault on an enemy position near Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, two wounded men were left lying in a position exposed to enemy fire. Private First Class Bowers, with a companion, voluntarily crawled to the men and after rendering first aid, dragged one of the men to safety. His courage, initiative, and constant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
