Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 43 (February 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Samuel L. Williams (ASN: 0-362978), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 22 to 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. During that period, the battalion in which Major Williams served as Executive Officer, received repeated attacks from the enemy determined to retake the town of Heiderscheid, Luxembourg. The speed and ferocity of the assaults carried the infantry supported tank attacks well into the inner defenses of the battalion and subjected the defenders to direct fire from self-propelled artillery and machine guns. Major Williams, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, moved about the battle area organizing rocket launcher teams and strengthening defensive positions after which he mounted a self-propelled tank destroyer and charged the enemy tanks, throwing them into complete rout and inspiring his own men to successfully fight back. The bravery, outstanding leadership, and loyal devotion to duty exhibited by Major Williams exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
