The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Claude J. Sieta (ASN: 38496620), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 13 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, in the attack on Langerscheid Hill, Luxembourg, the assaulting platoon was temporarily delayed by the steep ice covered slope and the intense fire from entrenchments surrounding the enemy command post at the crest of the hill. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Sieta voluntarily advanced under raking machine gun fire to a flank position some thirty yards from the enemy, effectively firing into the emplacement to kill the gunner and capture the position. His actions enabled the platoon to take the hill. The courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Sieta are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
