The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James G. Young (ASN: 0-460029), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 September 1944 in France. On that date, in the Foret de Haye, France, Lieutenant Young, commanding a reconnaissance in force, showed great skill in utilizing three medium tanks and deploying his platoon so that he was able to overcome strong enemy resistance and accomplish the mission of determining the strength of the enemy. While on the mission he located a well emplaced machine gun and used tank fire to destroy it. At another machine gun position he personally assaulted and effectively silenced one gun and crew while another gun was neutralized by his platoon. His aggressive actions and skill disclosed enemy defensive positions, which furnished valuable information in planning subsequent attacks. The courage, leadership, and constant devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Young were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
