The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas L. Merrick (ASN: 0-1312582), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 November 1944 in France. On that date, the rifle platoon commanded by Lieutenant Merrick was temporarily delayed in its advance by intense crossfire from concealed enemy machine gun positions. Realizing that his platoon would be annihilated if it remained in its exposed position, he withdrew the platoon to a covered position and with utter disregard for his own safety, accompanied by three of his men, Lieutenant Merrick moved forward despite wounds sustained from enemy fire to successfully lead his men in destroying the gun positions and crew with the use of bayonets and grenades. He then consolidated the objective attained which enabled the company to attack the next morning with little resistance. The bravery, leadership, and sincere devotion to duty exhibited by Lieutenant Merrick were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
