The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Gordon L. Lloyd (ASN: 35408211), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 November 1944 in France. On that date, during the attack on Delme Ridge, France, Sergeant Lloyd, in charge of a machine gun squad, learned that five seriously wounded men were lying on a hill three hundred yards to the front exposed to enemy artillery fire. With total disregard for his own safety, he advanced to the injured soldiers, despite constant artillery fire and successfully assisted them to a place of safety. During the night Sergeant Lloyd again went forward and evacuated three other comrades from the hill. His actions undoubtedly saved the lives of eight men who otherwise might have died due to the nature of their wounds and to exposure. The bravery, determination, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Lloyd were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
