The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Raymond N. Talcott (ASN: 01165579), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 November 1944 in France. On that date, the battalion to which Captain Talcott was assigned as Liaison Officer was attacking in the vicinity of the Nied River. As the assault progressed, both the battalion commander and the battalion S-3 were injured whereupon Captain Talcott immediately assumed command of an infantry unit and personally led the troops. His actions under heavy enemy fire were responsible for the battalion securing and maintaining a vital bridgehead over which an entire regiment crossed the Nied River to continue routing the enemy. The bravery, leadership, and zealous devotion to duty exhibited by Captain Talcott were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
