The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred E. Day, Jr. (ASN: 39151597), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 December 1944 in Belgium. On that date, while the mortar section squad led by Sergeant Day was establishing positions after attaining an objective, it was subjected to fire from the vicinity of a nearby ridge. Ordering his men to a place of safety, Sergeant Day, without hesitation, advanced three hundred yards away. As he personally assaulted the enemy position he was wounded in the arm but continued in the face of the raking fire until he was close enough to hurl a hand grenade. His actions resulted in the capturing of five of the enemy and the killing of three others. The bravery, aggressiveness and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Day was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
