The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) John W. Prestridge (ASN: 0-1017681), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 22 to 25 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On 22 December 1944, in a night action against the enemy the tank commanded by Lieutenant Prestridge, in conjunction with another tank, accounted for one enemy tank, and the next morning advanced to destroy two additional tanks. In a subsequent engagement with the enemy, the tank serving as support to Lieutenant Prestridge became disabled. Despite this loss he continued to fire effectively and held his position. On 25 December 1944, sighting an enemy convoy of vehicles, Lieutenant Prestridge moved his tank to a firing position and successfully destroyed one tank, two armored cars, and considerable infantry personnel, completely disorganizing the remainder of the column. The gallant courage, aggressive leadership, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Prestridge were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
