The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George W. Kane (ASN: 0-1058859), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 December 1944 in Belgium. On that date, in the capacity of a combat platoon leader, Lieutenant Kane, perceiving that the company to which he was attached was being temporarily delayed and suffering casualties from the fire of enemy automatic weapons firmly emplaced on high ground to the right flank, aggressively took charge of two partially displaced platoons and successfully routed the enemy from the ridge thereby enabling the company to seize and secure the assigned objective. The bravery, leadership, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Kane were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
