Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 25 (January 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William F. Humphreys (ASN: 0-1322553), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 23 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, Lieutenant Humphreys, platoon leader, assumed charge of a reserve rifle company when the commanding officer became a casualty. Before another company commander could be secured, the company was committed to attack on the left flank of the battalion to relieve pressure on the two assaulting companies. Lieutenant Humphreys then organized the attack and with the newly assigned commander led the company into enemy held positions. During the assault he was painfully wounded by shrapnel but refused to allow himself to be evacuated until all of the injured were treated and he had reported to the battalion commander the progress and situation of the company. The courage, leadership, and loyal devotion to duty of Second Lieutenant Humphreys was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
