The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Frank J. Lenner (ASN: 35313316), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 31 August 1944 in France. While on a mounted reconnaissance on 31 August 1944, Corporal Lenner perceived that his advance section had unavoidably been ambushed by enemy tanks and infantrymen. Dismounting and organizing his section into a hasty defense to effectively return the fire of the enemy, he was able to hold back the attacking forces long enough to allow his return to his disabled vehicle to radio to the following sections of the reconnaissance and warn them of the ambush. During the fire fight following this timely action by Corporal Lenner he was taken prisoner by the enemy. His courage, aggressiveness, and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
