The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Doyle R. Gustin (ASN: 6293761), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 29 November 1944 in France. Corporal Gustin, as Scout with an Artillery Forward Observer Team, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, exposed himself to enemy observation and tank fire by climbing and establishing himself in a tree to successfully direct artillery fire on enemy tanks, contributing greatly to the destruction of one enemy tank and the withdrawal of four others. Later, he again deliberately exposed himself to enemy fire to make a personal reconnaissance outside the company defense to direct fire on enemy troops, causing heavy casualties and forcing withdrawal of the remainder. The bravery, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty of Corporal Gustin were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
