The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Robert L. Tinney (ASN: 35761166), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 November 1944 in France. Sergeant Tinney, while serving as a company runner, encountered raking machine gun fire from two enemy forts covering the ravine through which he was making his way. With utter disregard of his personal safety, Sergeant Tinney led a platoon of his comrades over barbed wire entanglements protecting the enemy installations and entered into a fire fight, resulting in the capture of the company objective which proved to be an enemy forward artillery observation post. Sergeant Tinney and his companions were successful in capturing one enemy officer and two enemy non-commissioned officers. The outstanding leadership, initiative, and devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Tinney was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
