The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Loren C. L. Turner (ASN: 36416509), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 1 September and 17 September 1944. On 1 September 1944, Staff Sergeant Turner, while leading a combat patrol, discovered an enemy ambush in time to warn his men. The subsequent encounter with this enemy resulted in killing eleven and capturing twenty-two enemy, and permitted the company to continue its mission. On 27 September 1944, Staff Sergeant Turner was largely responsible for the repulsing of an enemy counterattack which threatened to overrun his position. On one occasion he deliberately raised his head to draw fire so that the location of a German machine gun could be ascertained. The conspicuous bravery, disregard for personal safety and unselfish devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Turner in these actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
