The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Hobbs (ASN: 35793416), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. On that date, Private First Class Hobbs, a rifleman in an infantry assault platoon, had taken cover with the rest of his platoon in a roadside ditch under heavy enemy machine gun fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, he crawled to the top of the embankment and fired at the machine gun position causing the heaviest casualties, until he had killed the enemy gunner. In full view of the enemy, he was twice wounded before accomplishing his self-assigned mission. The heroic aggressiveness displayed by Private First Class Hobbs was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
