The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant William G. Chapman (ASN: 20401793), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 November 1944 in France. On that date, the platoon which Technical Sergeant Chapman commanded was an assault platoon in an attack on a town. Enemy machine gun fire momentarily halted the advance. Technical Sergeant Chapman, realizing the critical situation, calmly walked toward a blazing enemy machine gun and killed the crew with his rifle. His conduct so inspired the men of his platoon that they immediately moved forward and destroyed the remaining enemy positions. His leadership, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
