The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Willie E. Gooch (ASN: 35484611), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 October 1944, when his platoon, upon capturing prisoners, was suddenly and heavily fired upon by an enemy machine gun, wounding the platoon leader and platoon sergeant. Although in hostile territory and in complete darkness, he assisted materially in routing the enemy and later successfully commanded the assault. His personal bravery and aggressive leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
