The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Rex H. Voss (ASN: 18074689), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism while serving with the 327th Air Engineering Squadron, 303d Air Service Group, TWENTIETH Air Force, on one of the Mariana Islands on several occasions during the period 14 August 1944 to 2 January 1945. Though not a trained munitions worker, Sergeant Voss volunteered at the risk of his life to aid in clearing an area of Japanese explosives. While he was engaged in this task, an unexploded 16-inch shell was discovered embedded in the ground. After excavating around the shell, it was found that the nose fuse was so badly crushed it was impossible to remove it. With full knowledge that the slightest slip or jar would cause a devastating explosion, Sergeant Voss, with the aid of another soldier, devised a sling for lifting the enormous weight of the shell. He then placed the shell in a truck and transported it over ten miles of extremely rough roads to the naval disposal point. He volunteered for similar duty on several occasions, often in the face of enemy strafing. Sergeant Voss’ courage in the face of such grave danger reflects great credit upon himself and the Army Air Force.
