Headquarters, 20th Air Force, General Orders No. 60 (September 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Medical Corps) Dalton C. Hartnett (ASN: 0-388520), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism as Flight Surgeon, 3d Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, TWENTIETH Air Force, during an enemy low-level, strafing attack, 27 November 1944, on the Island of Saipan. Major Hartnett, with complete disregard for his personal safety, left his foxhole under the intense fire of strafing aircraft directly overhead to administer first aid treatment. He treated a large group of soldiers who had been seriously injured by flaming gasoline and oil when one fighter made a suicide plunge toward a shore gun installation and exploded in flames. Bravely risking further explosions from the crashed plane only a few yards away, Major Hartnett directed and supervised immediate evacuation of all of the victims to the hospital. Not only did he probably save the lives of four of the most seriously injured soldiers but also he minimized the pain and severity of burns of the others. The devotion of Major Hartnett to his profession, and his courage in the face of enemy action reflect great credit upon himself and the Army Medical Corps.
