The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Major Danny M. McLendon, United States Army, for heroism as a Vulnerability Assessment Team Chief, Joint Security Directorate, Forward, United States Central Command, while engaged in ground combat against an enemy of the United States at Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar from 27 August 2004 to 22 December 2004. Major McLendon demonstrated extraordinary professionalism and leadership by leading a Vulnerability Assessment Team that conducted over thirty-five assessments of facilities throughout some of the most dangerous locations in Iraq without incurring casualties to his team. When Major McLendon’s convoy came under attack in Taji, Iraq, he quickly maneuvered his vehicle through enemy fire creating a blocking force to protect the unarmored buses in his group and ensured that no vehicles could penetrate the stricken convoy. During his tenure in Iraq, he made a myriad of combat proven force protection recommendations for sites belonging to the Department of Defense, Department of State, the Interim Iraqi Government, Iraq Ministries, and the United Nations, in support of Operation IRAQ FREEDOM, decreasing the likelihood of terrorist attacks against United States and Coalition forces, saving coalition lives. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Major McLendon has reflected great credit upon himself and the Unites States Air Force. (The Combat “V” is authorized.)
