The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William Ray Buchheister (ASN: US-55987680), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Buchheister distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 9 March 1969, while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during an enemy attack. When his unit’s location came under an intense enemy rocket and mortar attack, followed by fierce ground attacks, Sergeant Buchheister continually exposed himself to the hostile fire as he deployed his men into effective fighting positions and directed their fire against the numerically superior enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, he carried numerous wounded comrades to covered positions. At one point during the long battle, Sergeant Buchheister moved forward and destroyed an enemy attempt to establish an anti-aircraft position, undoubtedly preventing many additional friendly casualties. Although seriously wounded during the action, Sergeant Buchheister was an inspiration to his comrades. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
