The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Monty Lowell Frisbie (ASN: US-56908501), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Frisbie distinguished himself by exceptional heroism in action on 30 January 1968 in the vicinity of Tuy Hoa, Republic of Vietnam, while serving as Battery Aidman assigned to Battery C, 6th Battalion, 32d Artillery. In the early morning hours of 30 January, Battery C was attacked by the 5th Battalion, 95th North Vietnamese Army Regiment. The attack was initiated by an intense mortar barrage followed by a ground attack utilizing small arms, automatic weapons and B-40 rockets, which penetrated the southern flank of the battery. Unhesitatingly, Specialist Frisbie moved into the line of fire and began retrieving the wounded. Throughout four hours of continuous heavy small arms and B-40 rocket fire he personally retrieved and treated seventeen wounded comrades, repeatedly exposing himself to intense hostile fire. Establishing an emergency aid station, Specialist Frisbie controlled the evacuation of the wounded from his unit and the alert force sent to aid the battery. Specialist Frisbie was so skillful and thorough in his treatment of the wounded that none of the critically wounded who passed through his aid station died. Specialist Frisbie also used ingenuity in utilizing an M-548 ammunition carrier as an ambulance for retrieving the wounded in areas of intense hostile fire. When the enemy was finally repulsed from the battery position, Specialist Frisbie continued to administer first aid to the wounded of the reaction force who were still fighting outside the battery perimeter. Specialist Frisbie’s indomitable courage, determination, and profound concern for his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
