The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Edward W. Doherty (ASN: 32291255), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Bizory, Belgium, on 8 January 1945. During an intense enemy artillery and mortar concentration an ammunition dump which was next to a combined fortified position, company command post and troop shelter, was set on fire. He, with complete disregard for personal safety, put the fire out. His great courage, sound judgment, and initiative reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
