The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant William G. Clark (ASN: 20203863), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. When the Regimental Command Post was being heavily attacked by enemy infantry, Sergeant Clark voluntarily accompanied the Regimental Executive Officer on a lengthy foot reconnaissance through areas under intense small arms fire. Though his normal duties did not require him on the front lines, Sergeant Clark nevertheless armed himself with a Thompson submachine gun and proceeded to the front lines where sometime later he advanced. As our troops counterattacked and advanced, Sergeant Clark personally reduced several firmly entrenched enemy strong points. His fearless display of courage was of the best traditions of a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army.
