Headquarters, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 11931 (September 28, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain David Blair Craig, United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 8 July 1970. Captain Craig distinguished himself while serving as Commanding Officer of Troop D, 2d Squadron (Airmobile), 17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division, during a reconnaissance-in-force mission in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. While moving along a thickly-vegetated trail, the lead element of Captain Craig’s unit came under enemy fire and sustained numerous casualties. Redeploying the remainder of his men, Captain Craig moved forward under intense fire and directed return fire on the enemy positions. Coordinating air support and suppressive fire, he organized the evacuation of several casualties from close to the enemy emplacements. Sending all but a small group of his men to a landing zone, Captain Craig successfully broke contact with the enemy. Reaching the landing zone himself, he guided the extraction helicopters into the area and remained on the ground until all his men were safely extracted. Captain Craig’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
