Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 52 (June 30, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps) Linscott Alden Hall (ASN: 0-20681), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 424th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, protecting elements of the 1st Armored Division, on 3 May 1944, in the vicinity of *****, Italy. Colonel Hall, on the night of 3 May 1944, was observing and reporting a concentrated air attack on the Division Command Post area by an estimated fifteen enemy aircraft. One of the first sticks of bombs fell within fifty yards of where Lieutenant Colonel Hall was observing. Throughout the attack which lasted several minutes in which AP and HE bombs caused numerous casualties, Lieutenant Colonel Hall moved about the area directing his anti-aircraft defenses and the removal of casualties, two of whom had been buried under their caved-in dugout. His actions assisted materially in the destruction of six of the fifteen planes by his own and adjacent anti-aircraft units. His services as commander of this battalion in the area was characterized by similar actions on many other occasions. His disregard for his personal welfare, coolness under fire and prompt decisions were an inspiration to all serving under and with him, and are deserving of highest praise.
