The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander (MC) Arthur J. White (NSN: 0-13223), United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage, and disregard of personal danger while serving as Senior Medical Officer on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), in action against Japanese forces during the Battle of the Coral Sea on 7 and 8 May 1942. Although himself wounded and suffering acute pain, Commander White remained at his battle station ministering to the wounds of others and thereby saved the lives of many injured. Subsequently, when violent explosions rendered his battle station untenable, he supervised the transfer of the injured to another part of the ship. Finally, when all hands had been ordered to abandon ship, he personally directed the removal of the wounded, all the while enduring great physical pain and refusing medical treatment for himself. His conduct on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
