The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Delbert R. Thomas (ASN: 17002866), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery G, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), in action at Bataan, Philippine Islands, on or about 5 April 1942. When, during the course of an intensive aerial bombardment of his battery position, a dump of high explosives and aircraft ammunition was hit and set on fire. Private First Class Thomas voluntarily left his position of safety and assisted in extinguishing the fire. His timely and courageous action at the risk of his life saved valuable and much-needed anti-aircraft ammunition and vial and delicate fire-control equipment from destruction. Private First Class Thomas’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
