The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Milton C. Shedd (ASN: 0-524408), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 14 to 16 November 1944. Voluntarily leading his patrol of twelve men on a reconnaissance far beyond our lines, Lieutenant Shedd encountered a substantial force of the enemy. Lieutenant Shedd at once called for reinforcements; meanwhile, he and three men made a complete encirclement of the area, locating enemy weapons and strong points. In the ensuing action led by Lieutenant Shedd, twenty-three of the enemy, the entire group, were killed without loss of any of our troops. As a result of Lieutenant Shedd’s gallant, well-planned action, much valuable information was obtained. His intrepid leadership and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
