Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 33 (February 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Clayton R. Clough (ASN: 31351492), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 580th Ambulance Company (Motor). The conspicuous courage Technician Fifth Grade Clough displayed while performing his duties as an ambulance driver marks him as an outstanding soldier. On 17 December 1944, at Clerf, Luxembourg, he fearlessly braved intense enemy fire to rescue a wounded soldier from an exposed position. Although wounded himself during this action, Technician Fifth Grade Clough continued on his voluntary mission and succeeded in evacuating the wounded soldier. His heroism and supreme devotion exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
