Headquarters, XIV Corps, General Orders No. 105 (August 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel C. Carroll (ASN: 19084567), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 5 June 1944. As a Squad Leader, Sergeant Carroll accompanied a small reconnaissance patrol into Japanese territory. The patrol ran into an ambush and received heavy fire from two machine guns and many rifles at close range. A number of men were killed or wounded in the fire fight which followed. Sergeant Carroll voluntarily and courageously crawled forward to a wounded comrade who lay helplessly in a position swept by machine gun and rifle fire, and carried the man back to comparative safety. Sergeant Carroll’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
