Department of the Army, General Orders No. 16 (May 24, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Sylvester C. Bitter, Jr. (ASN: 0-1305002), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Deposito, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 8 December 1944. During an attack his platoon was held up by intense fire from a well dug-in strong point. Seeing that his men were being disorganized by this fire, he determined to attack. Organizing the platoon, he led the assault and the men, inspired by his example, overran the position. In this gallant action, Lieutenant Bitter was killed. His fearless example reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Infantry.
