Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 118 (May 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John A. Stinson (ASN: RA-11202584), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division on 13 March 1951, in the vicinity of Yudon-ni, Korea. Private Stinson’s platoon was moving to assume positions on a high hill and to consolidate the newly-won ground. On the way to the objective, a group of enemy jumped from well concealed positions ready to open fire. Seeing the enemy taking aim at the platoon leader, who was studying a map at the time, Private Stinson immediately and coolly opened fire with his rifle, killing two enemy before they could harm the platoon leader. He then engaged the remaining enemy in a firefight, holding them at bay until the remainder of the platoon formed a firing line. His quick action enabled the platoon to engage and rout the enemy and to continue the advance to its objective. The gallantry displayed by Private Stinson reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
