Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 89 (April 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Stafford D. Shipley (ASN: RA-18347172), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery A, 15th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 7th Infantry Division, in action near Hoengsung, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On that date, Corporal Shipley was in charge of an M-16 multiple machine gun half-track which was protecting a road intersection to permit the passage of the vehicles of a task force into Wonju, Korea. While his M-16 was engaged in firing at the enemy, Corporal Shipley heard a call for assistance from his Section Chief, who had discovered eight seriously wounded soldiers in a burning house. Corporal Shipley unhesitatingly made his way to the house through intense enemy fire to assist in carrying the wounded men to a place of comparative safety, after which he helped to load them into passing vehicles for evacuation. Corporal Shipley’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
