The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) William O. Keeling, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 21st Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 25th Infantry Division, in action near Ujiongby, Korea, on 25 April 1951. During a powerful hostile attack, Lieutenant Keeling organized his half-track platoon to cover the displacement of friendly forces to more tenable positions. Although all the rifle elements had apparently passed through, he held his vehicles in place, despite the proximity to the onrushing foe, in the belief that others might still be at the front. His actions enabled the rear guard of another platoon to withdraw to safety. First Lieutenant Keeling’s courage, resolute leadership and steadfast devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
