The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Daniel D. Hopfensperger, Jr. (ASN: RA-16276375), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company E, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 11 September 1950 near Taegu, Korea. When his company was attacking under heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire to seize and hold the strategic high ground to their front, Sergeant Hopfensperger, as mortar chief, voluntarily went forward to act as forward observer. Although the company was pinned down by the intense enemy fire, Sergeant Hopfensperger completely disregarded his own safety to stand fully exposed on the crest of the hill to more effectively direct his section’s fire. This gallant act cost Sergeant Hopfensperger his life, but not until his fire direction had inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and enabled Company E to complete its mission. His fearless behavior and devotion to duty provided an inspiring example to the other mortar crews. Sergeant Hopfensperger’s selfless gallantry, conspicuous devotion to duty and outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
