Thomas Wilson’s Pilot, Captain Jerry Hoblit, was recommended for the Air Force Cross for this mission and, decades later when Wilson learned it had never been approved, initiated actions that ultimately resulted in award of the Air Force Cross to Hoblit in 2003.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Thomas Wilson, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an F-105F Electronics Warfare Officer of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, Tuy Hoa Air Base, Vietnam, in aerial action near Thai Nguyen, North Vietnam on 23 April 1967. Captain Wilson’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
