Department of the Army, General Orders No. 33 (July 26, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Transportation Corps) John Robert Schumann (ASN: 0-84511), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as an Advisor with Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, in action in Cai Be District, Vietnam, against the Viet Cong, on 16 June 1965. After clearing a mined road in the accompaniment of his counterpart and a Popular Force unit, an ambush was triggered resulting in the wounding of two Vietnamese officers. Captain Schumann immediately responded by directing return fires exposing himself to extensive hostile automatic weapons fire. As the wounded counterpart and forward observer were evacuated, Captain Schumann remained in position and provided covering fires, killing several Viet Cong before being overrun and captured. Captain Schumann’s actions reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
