Department of the Army, General Orders No. 18 (April 24, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Major Bogue P. Harrison, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as a Forward Air Controller in direct support of ground combat operations of the 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action on 26 May 1967, in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early afternoon hours, two companies of the 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry became engaged with a Viet Cong force in well-fortified and camouflaged positions. For a period of three hours Major Harrison directed two tactical air strikes in support of the lead elements of Company A, 2d battalion, 14th Infantry. These air strikes were brought within 50 meters of a heavily engaged platoon and materially assisted in the evacuation of the dead and wounded personnel. He assumed control of the battalion maneuver forces when the battalion commander had to leave the area for fuel. During this period, he directed two medical evacuation helicopter fire teams. Major Harrison continued his efforts by sighting and locating Viet Cong positions that were in close proximity to the left flank platoon of Company C, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry. These Viet Cong positions were so located that it would have been extremely hazardous to friendly troops to bring either tactical air or other supporting fires. Major Harrison asked for permission from the battalion commander to fly into these positions and mark them with white smoke grenades, in an effort to make the Viet Cong believe that an airstrike would follow. Through enemy small arms fire Major Harrison made repeated low level passes marking the withdrawal, exposing them to friendly ground fire and allowed Company C to continue its attack onto their objective. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
