The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Roberto Ramos (MCSN: 2396857), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company H, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 January 1969, Lance Corporal Ramos was leading his squad toward a village suspected of harboring hostile soldiers in Quang Ngai Province when the Marines encountered a mined area and came under a heavy volume of small arms fire from an enemy unit occupying well-concealed emplacements. Although seriously wounded, Lance Corporal Ramos ignored his painful injury and, rallying his squad, initiated an aggressive assault upon the hostile positions, fearlessly moving about the hazardous area as he shouted words of encouragement to his men and directed their accurate fire. When fire superiority had been achieved, he then administered first aid to his wounded men and commenced moving them to a landing zone for medical evacuation. Disregarding his own safety, he resolutely continued his determined efforts until he was mortally wounded by the detonation of an enemy explosive device. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the defeat of the hostile force. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Ramos upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
