The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Luis A. Cruz (MCSN: 87421797), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 4 November 1970, while searching for enemy soldiers in a densely vegetated area of the Que Son Mountains south of DaNang, Lance Corporal Cruz alertly detected a sniper concealed in the foliage. Realizing that he and the squad leader who was walking beside him had been observed by the hostile soldier, Lance Corporal Cruz selflessly thought first of the safety of his companion and, without hesitation, turned and pushed the Marine to the ground. As he whirled back to fire at the enemy, he was mortally wounded by automatic weapons fire delivered at point-blank range. By his courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in an extremely critical situation, Lance Corporal Cruz inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
