The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Larry O. J. Booty (MCSN: 2062303), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 8 January 1966. As a Fire Team Leader, Corporal Booty was participating in an operation approximately ten miles south of DaNang when the rear elements of the Second Platoon came under heavy rifle and automatic rifle fire. One Marine was killed and two were wounded instantaneously. On two occasions Corporal booty coolly and without regard for his own personal safety made his way over seventy-five meters out into the inundated rice paddy and successfully brought two wounded Marines to safety. He then proceeded to set up security for a landing zone for a medical evacuation helicopter. His courageous and selfless action reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
